Chapter Twenty-One

The excited shouts and laughter of children peppered the air above the front courtyard of the children’s home. Drake watched the kids play from where he crouched atop a water tower in the field across the road, on the outskirts of the small Texas town.

It had been some time since he’d visited the place where he’d grown up.

The children’s home had been erected on the grounds of the orphanage that had stood there once. No signs remained of the devastating fire that had ripped through the buildings of the original institution twenty-two years ago, on the night Drake’s powers had started to awaken. The townsfolk had taken great pains to rebuild something that would not succumb so easily to another disastrous blaze.

He’d been eighteen when he’d come back here for the first time since the accident. He’d visited the graveyard where the bodies of the nuns and the children who had perished that night had been interred and had mourned their demise all over again, tears falling down his face as he silently begged for their forgiveness.

Though he knew now that he had had no control over what had happened that fateful night, it did not take away from the guilt he would carry with him for the rest of his life.

In time, the graveyard and the children’s home had become a place of reflection, one he came to when he had a decision to make. Today was such a day.

A sense of calm filled Drake as he rose into the overcast sky a short time later. He turned and headed back toward Chicago, the wind whipping away at his body oddly refreshing.

He knew what he had to do when the time came for him to face the inescapable fate that awaited him.

The trip home was swift, his supernatural speed eating away hundreds of miles in a matter of minutes. It was when he came in sight of Lake Michigan that the clouds started to clear and he saw the eclipse bathing the land in a half light.

“What the—?!”

Drake jolted to a stop in mid-air, his shocked gaze on the dark circle in the sky. The conversation he’d had with Artemus the night before sprung to his mind.

When Solomon alluded to the unforeseen repercussions of him delaying the opening of his gate, is this what he meant? Could it have resulted in a solar eclipse?!

He stared at the celestial event for a long time before slowly resuming his original course, unease clouding his thoughts. He couldn’t help but feel that the eclipse was an omen.

He was on the outskirts of the city when he started to hear Artemus’s voice in his head. His brother sounded tense and anxious.

Drake frowned. Did he not see the note?

The bond linking him to his twin and the divine beasts grew stronger as he closed in on the mansion. To his surprise, he soon sensed the other Guardians’ agitation too.

Drake slowed when he detected the heavy police presence surrounding the LeBlanc estate from over a mile away.
